BEST TIME TO VISIT Zanzibar
Zanzibar enjoys a warm, tropical climate year-round, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from the mid-20s to mid-30s°C (79–93°F) and sea temperatures warm enough for swimming in every season. That said, two distinct dry seasons offer the most reliable conditions for beach holidays, diving, and combining with a mainland safari.
June – October (Peak Dry Season)
This is widely considered the best all-round time to visit. Skies are clear, days are warm (around 26°C/79°F), and the seas are calm. It’s also peak season for spice tours, with clove harvests taking place between July and September. Winds come from the southwest during this period, so the northern and eastern coasts offer the best-sheltered beaches. This window also aligns with peak safari season on the Tanzanian mainland, making it ideal for pairing the island with a classic East African safari.
December – February (Warm & Sunny)
A second dry spell, slightly hotter and drier, with minimal rainfall and a more relaxed atmosphere than the June–October peak. Winds shift to the northeast, favouring the southern and western coasts. December is particularly good for diving with whale sharks in the Mafia Archipelago, while January and February bring some of the year’s finest diving conditions around the coral reefs.
November (Short Rains)
A brief, transitional period with short afternoon showers but largely sunny mornings and still very workable for beach time, and quieter than peak months.
March – May (Long Rains)
The wettest period, with heavier, more sustained rainfall from mid-March through May. Many lodges close, and beach conditions are less reliable, but this is when Zanzibar is quietest, and rates are at their lowest; a good option for travellers prioritizing value and solitude over guaranteed sunshine.
